What has been updated

Three things. The body is cut closer through the chest and waist, so the jacket follows the shoulders rather than hanging off them. The ribbing is shallower and plain rather than deep and striped — striped rib is the single detail that reads most strongly as school kit. And the colour is kept to one, rather than the two-tone body and sleeves a traditional varsity uses.

What stays is the snap placket, the ribbed collar, cuffs and hem, and the angled hip pockets. Those are what make it a varsity rather than a bomber.

The snap placket

Snaps rather than a zip give a flat, uninterrupted front — there is no zip tape running up the centre of the jacket. It also means you can wear it fully open with the placket hanging straight, which is how most people wear a varsity.

The trade-off is wind: snaps leave small gaps between fasteners where a zip seals completely, so this suits milder weather better than a zip bomber does. Each snap is set through a reinforced tab so it does not tear out of the hide.

Build

Real leather with double-stitched seams and reinforcement at the shoulders. Dense knit rib at the collar, cuffs and hem that recovers rather than stretching out. Angled hip pockets, an interior pocket, and a smooth lining so the jacket goes on over a knit without dragging.

Fit and styling
