A leather biker vest is for layering, displaying patches and riding in warm weather. A leather jacket is for wind protection, warmth and abrasion resistance. They are not alternatives to each other, which is why most riders who wear one eventually own both.

What the Vest Is For
The vest has three real jobs.
Patches. This is the main one. A vest gives you a clean back panel and open front panels to display patches, pins and rockers. That is why it exists in rider culture, and why it is worn over other clothing rather than under it.
Warm weather riding. When a full leather jacket is too hot, a vest still gives you a leather layer across the torso while leaving your arms free.
Layering. A vest goes over a hoodie, a flannel shirt or even over a jacket. It adds a windproof panel across the chest and back without adding sleeve bulk.

What the Jacket Is For
Wind. At speed, wind chill is the real issue rather than air temperature. A full leather jacket blocks it across the whole upper body.
Abrasion resistance. Heavyweight cowhide across the shoulders, elbows and forearms is what a riding jacket is actually for.
Warmth. With a quilted or shearling lining, a leather jacket handles genuinely cold riding.
Armour. Shoulder, elbow and back protectors need a jacket to sit in. A vest has nowhere to put them.

Which Should You Buy First?
Buy the jacket first if you ride regularly, you ride in cold or variable weather, or protection is a real consideration for you. A jacket does more of the jobs that matter.
Buy the vest first if you ride mainly in warm weather, patches and club identity are the point, or you already own a textile riding jacket and want the leather layer for the look.
Buy both if you ride year round. Most riders end up here. The vest goes over the jacket in cold weather so the patches still show, and replaces it entirely in summer.
They Fit Very Differently
This is where people go wrong most often.
Vest sizing
A vest is worn over other layers, so it must be sized for what goes underneath. If you will wear it over a leather jacket, size it to close comfortably over that jacket, which usually means one or two sizes up from your jacket size.
Armholes need to be deep enough that they do not bind when you reach forward for the bars. Shallow armholes are the most common fault on a cheap vest. The length should cover your belt.
Jacket sizing
A jacket is worn over a t-shirt or a thin layer, and should fit closer than a fashion jacket when standing, because it is cut for a forward riding position. Our Harley Davidson sizing guide covers riding fit in full.

What to Check on a Vest
- Hide weight. Cowhide around 1.2 mm or heavier. A thin vest will not hold patches flat.
- Back panel. Ideally a single piece of leather with no centre seam, so a large back patch sits flat.
- Armhole depth. Deep enough to reach forward freely.
- Closure. Snaps, zip or lacing. Snaps should close firmly and stay closed at speed.
- Side lacing. Useful if you want adjustment for layering underneath.
Wearing Both Together
The standard combination in cold weather is vest over jacket. That keeps your patches visible while the jacket does the work underneath.
For that to work, the vest has to be sized for it from the start. A vest bought to fit over a t-shirt will not close over a heavyweight jacket. Decide before you order, and tell us which you want it sized for.
